IEE Wiring Regulations 17th Edition - BS7671 January 2008

The IEE Wiring Regulations BS 7671 is the national standard to which all industrial and domestic wiring must now conform. The 17th edition (published in 2008) IEE Wiring Regulations contains many major changes in order to align with European documents.

The Regulations are produced by the IET, fully known as the Institution of Engineering and Technology. The IEE is used for all books related to the Wiring Regulations and is an imprint of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.

The 17th Edition reflects many major changes over the 16th edition, to both the technical content and layout and structure of the publication. There are many changes, that need to be considered, but key changes include:

  • A change which allows a socket outlet to be installed in bathrooms (depending on being 3m from the edge of a bath or shower and RCD protected)
  • New ‘special locations’ are now covered in the IEE Wiring Regulations, including: floor and heating systems, exhibitions, photovoltaic (PV) power supply systems, marinas and fairgrounds / amusements parks.
  • International standards have dictated the re-numbering and re-structuring of chapters throughout.
  • The most obvious change is in the name - now the 17th Edition IEE Wiring regulations as opposed the 16th edition. This identifies the major changes to the previous regulations which had been in place since 1991.

NICEIC

NICEIC stands for National Inspection Council for Electrical Installation, and is one of the main organisations in relation to electrical installation in the UK. The NICEIC is a voluntary organisation that looks after all matters electrical in the UK. Its overall objective is to protect humans from “unsafe and un-sound electrical work”.

The NICEIC are able to regulate the work of the electricians that join their organisation. For an electrician to become a member of the NICEIC they have to be very competent with their electrical work. If you hire an NICEIC registered electrician such as Security And Fire Experts (SAFE) then you are hiring from a selection of the best companies in the industry.

The positive side for members of the public when hiring SAFE as their electrical contractor of choice is that we are NICEIC registered and the work we carry out is guaranteed by the NICEIC. As such, if ever there was anything to go wrong with our work (which is very rare) the NICEIC would take care of rectifying the installation free of charge.

As an NICEIC installer, we are assessed on a regular basis to ensure that we are competent and capable of meeting the relevant technical and safety standards.

Registration with NICEIC means that SAFE are approved to undertake domestic, commercial, and industrial electrical work in accordance with current wiring regulations (BS 7671). At the end of any works affected by Part P from the Government’s Building regulation, we will notify the NICEIC of the works completed and customers will receive a Building Compliance Certificate from the NICEIC so that they know that the work has been registered with their Local Authority Building Control.

What is Part P?

Part P is an amendment of the Building Regulations introduced by the Government, effective from 1st January 2005, that SAFE engineers always adhere to with our electrical installations.

Part P applies to fixed electrical installations in homes, including gardens and shared amenities in blocks of flats, and affects many of the jobs undertaken by electricians, particularly in kitchens and bathrooms.

Work affected by Part P is subject to notification to local building control bodies. All works must either be inspected by these local authorities incurring an extra, expensive fee or can be undertaken by an electrician who has been assessed by a Competent Persons Scheme such as the NICEIC and is therefore able to self-certify, such as SAFE.

NICEIC Insurance Backed Warranty

All works undertaken by SAFE which are required to be registered with Building Control under Part P are backed by the NICEIC Insurance Backed Warranty. The purpose of the warranty is to protect clients should any electrical works be found not to comply with the Building Regulations under circumstances where the contractor is no longer in business to undertake the necessary remedial work.

The financial limit placed on the work is £25,000 in respect of any one installation per period of insurance and the warranty is valid for a period of 6 years from the date of completion of the original work.

What is TrustMark?

TrustMark is a scheme supported by the Government, the building industry and consumer groups to help consumers and specifiers find reliable and trustworthy trades people to make improvements and repairs to domestic properties. If a firm displays the TrustMark logo you can be assured that it has been checked against a set of standards set by the Government by a TrustMark approved body.

As stated, All SAFE’s installation work is NICEIC accredited, and as a Trust mark approved company you can be sure of quality workmanship every time.
